Simple, practical Nepal travel guidelines for a smooth, hassle-free adventure. Prepare with confidence and focus on the experience.

Information·Updated July 5, 2026

Planning a trip to Nepal is exciting, and a little preparation goes a long way toward a smooth, hassle-free adventure. We’ve put together simple, practical guidelines to help you focus on the experience, not the logistics. Whether you’re trekking to Everest Base Camp or exploring the temples of the Kathmandu Valley, these essentials keep you safe, comfortable, and respectful.

First, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date. You’ll need a visa on arrival at Kathmandu’s airport—have a passport-sized photo and the fee in cash, with USD being the easiest option for the exact amount. For treks, a TIMS card and national park permits are required; we handle these for you as part of your package, so you don’t have to worry about queues or paperwork at busy trailheads. This means you step off the plane and into your adventure without delays.

Packing light is key. Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots, a warm sleeping bag, and layers for changing weather are essentials. Avoid cotton on the trail—synthetics or wool keep you dry and comfortable as temperatures shift from morning chill to midday sun. Cash is king in remote mountain villages, so carry enough Nepali rupees for snacks, tips, and small purchases, as card machines are rare above 2,000 meters. A reusable water bottle with a filter or purification tablets is also a smart addition, as it reduces plastic waste and ensures you stay hydrated safely.

Respect local customs to connect meaningfully with the communities you visit. A simple “Namaste” with palms together, spoken with a smile, is warmly received everywhere. Always ask before taking photos of people or religious sites, and avoid entering temples with leather goods. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, especially in temples and villages, and keep public displays of affection discreet. These small gestures build trust and open doors to genuine cultural exchanges.

Health comes first. Drink only boiled or purified water—our lodges provide it—and stick to cooked, hot meals to avoid stomach issues. Altitude sickness is a real risk on high treks above 3,000 meters; our guides are trained to spot early symptoms like headaches or dizziness and will adjust your pace for safety. Listen to your body and your guide without hesitation—no summit is worth a risk, and descending is always the right call if symptoms persist. We also recommend carrying a basic first-aid kit with blister treatment, pain relievers, and any personal medications.

Finally, travel insurance is mandatory for all our treks. It must cover helicopter evacuation up to at least 5,000 meters, as well as trip cancellation and medical expenses. We’ll confirm your policy details with you before departure, so you’re covered for peace of mind in the remote Himalaya. Without proper insurance, you risk significant out-of-pocket costs in an emergency, so double-check your policy covers high-altitude trekking.

With these basics in place, you’re free to soak in the towering peaks, ancient culture, and genuine warmth of Nepal. Let us take care of the rest—from airport pickup to teahouse bookings—so your adventure unfolds naturally. Every detail we manage means more time for you to breathe in the mountain air, share stories around a lodge fire, and create memories that last a lifetime.
